He was 64 years, 7 months and 4 days. Ben was born November 23, 1940 in Helena, Texas. Ben worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, Red Ewald, Mika Mills, he retired after 16 years from the Texas Department of Highways and Public Transportation and he also farmed his entire life. He lived in the Helena area all his life and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Ben is survived by his mother, Mary Opiela Kortz of Helena; sons, Allan Kortz of Helena, Brian Kortz of Victoria and Michael Kortz of Seguin; daughter, Joanne Semper of Yorktown; brothers, Alvin Kortz of Seguin, Jerry Kortz of Helena and Tom Kortz of Yorktown; sisters, Patricia Boerm of Pettus and Joyce Escobedo of Karnes City; and four grandchildren. Preceded in death by his father, Joseph Kortz. A rosary was recited Thursday at 7 p.m. in Rhodes Funeral Chapel. Funeral services were held Friday, July 1, 2005 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panna Maria with Rev. Wojciech Reisch officiating. Burial followed the Panna Maria Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Christopher Albert, Jeffrey Baggett, Bobby Bates, Jr., Ernie Freeman, Charles McNelly, III, and Clarence Opiela. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Boerm and Frank Escobedo.
