    • From Family Information from Joyce Sheckler Heiss:
= TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS, An Account of the Early Settlement of the Broad Top Area, David Ira Foster & Jon D. Baughman, Publ. Youth for Progress, 1969.
When Shaub, Stoner, Sheckler, Stoler Johnston and others settled here, Friggs sold part of the land Names of Settlers ... Frederick Sheckler, Philip Stoner, Martin Stoler and his sons Frederick aged 13 years and John in his tenth year... that massacre in the Wyoming Valley, July 2 1t78 so worked on the feelings of Johnstons, Sheckler and others that they got ready and left the fort a few days after, part going to Md. and others to Duncans Island Pa... This was early May (1719.] and in a few days Shecklers with some more Bucks County emigrants return... Shecklers returned to his Shy Beaver place, now occupied by Adam Speck... Sheckler in his trips back and forth up and down the river to Shoup's had different times cast longing glances at the river bottoms owned by Shoup, now called George Berkstresser place and at last he traded for at least a part of it to Silas Sabastian Shoup (we find his name written this way on the Weaver deed) giving in place of it his Shy Beaver improvement Sheckler built a house near where the spring is against the hill opposite to where the mansion house now stands which is occupied by the widow Berkstresser and Michael Savits And all of the land that was settled and improved prior to the return of the settlers in 1787 the Stoler and Sheckler is the only one that has remained in the name and was owned all the time by the same name and farmed for a livelyhood. T. E. LePhone...
By Saturday, July 15, 1780 the Forters at Shoups had sent one of their number, Joshua Davis, familiarly known as commissary Davis to the Big Cove to see if they could expect any aid from there. His return had been earnestly looked for but not returning they concluded to the mouth of clear water run, where Riddlesburg now is and do some fishing, and on this detail were several men and big boys, all well armed: among the men we learned was Frederick.
Sheckler, Philip Stoner, Michael Whetstone Petterson Cherry, and others. But there was one drawback to our leaving at once [Jul 1780] for two
families were absent from the Fort and were at their houses though the families of the fishing parties were in the Fort for protection while they were on the expedition The families that were out were Frederick Heater of the Valley Hill place and Rev Thomas Johnston of the Island place and they did not wish to leave those two behind, yet it was a perilous undertaking to warn them and Sabastian Shoup asked for two volunters to warn those two families. And though rather heavy and clumsy for one to be sent on such an errand, Frederick Sheckler was first to volunteer. His seven years service in the German Army had left an everlasting impression of duty that danger made it the more self binding to him. So he was sent to Frederick Heaters. He crossed the river below the mouth of Shoups run and crossed the hills as in this way he could avoid the Indiana as they had not time to be out of the Valley yet...The gathering of the stock together to start could be done in a very short time While this was done Peterson Cherry returned with the Johnston's Family and shortly after, Sheckler arrived at the Fort with all the Heater family except John, a boy about 17 years of age who he found dead at the fence before he reached the house Sheckler gave this bold report to his children and afterwards by them to us (See Chapter XLVII, Indians Force Abandonment of Fort). Frederick Sheckler was a township officer in the year 1786 Also we find that Huntingdon County was struck off from Bedford County in 1787 and present line runs about 100 rods south of the old mill dam... So from the facts which we have gathered, we find with the return of Sheckler, Shaubs and Stoner in 1785 commenced the first permanent settlement of this section.
