Came to the Broad Top region from Maryland. He married Nancy Sheckler- a Delaware Indian maiden who resided, with her kin folks, about where the Pennsylvania Central Light plant stands in what is now Saxton, PA.
Maiden Sheckler was born 1810 (1797) and became a great huntress and
Horseback rider. With eight sons and a colored maid, Hannah Nolan, came to Round Knob and were the first settlers in that area. They erected a cabin near where the Raymond Figard house now stands and built a shanty for Hannah-the maid. The family was quite wealthy but lost heavily on a cattle venture due to water shortage. Five of the boys took up farming in Illinois. He built a grist mill where Defiance, PA now stands and operated it with his son William. John C. and Joseph Figard made what was called 'cut nails' (three nails were cut with but one heating), getting their iron from Hopewell, PA and shipping their product, via boat, to Philadelphia, PA.
