Johann Carl emigrated from Schadeck, bei Runkel, Nassau in the autumn of 1844 aboard the ship JOHANN DETHARDT when he was 18 years old. He spent the winter on the Texas coast with his family before the trek towards a promised Fisher-Miller land grant. The family only made it to the area which became New Braunfels, Texas when the original plan was postponed. Johann Carl is one of the first founders of New Braunfels, Texas. When he reached New Braunfels, Texas Johann Carl was listed as #157 in Rev. Ervendberg's German Protestant Church. He also received Town Lot #35 because he was a single man over the age of 17. This lot was located on San Antonio St. across from the beginning of Comal Street. Johann Carl is not found in the 1850 Comal County Census, but researcher E.J. Hierholzer verifies that the family did live in Comal County at the time.
